Just launching this
Oh god putting together automated builds is painful and the worst part is they're still really basic.
So lots of things to improve there when I get around to it, but to be honest I just wanted to get something up and available otherwise this project too will join the many, many games that I've built but not launched.
The GMTK 2021 Game Jam was a great experience, but I'd like to try making something that lives a little bit longer.
I don't know what it is about games that makes me not launch them. Give me an app, or a website, or a server or something, sure, happy to get that running. But a game? Shudder
To be honest, it's probably because I'm not too great at the art/graphics side of things =)...
All in all this is pretty basic =), hence my calling it a toy. If I'm lucky it won't remain one.
Where is this at?
Version 0.0.1:
Well lets show some pictures:
We've got a map, which is made up of some really simple world generation, as well as resource allocation in the form of the emoji icons you see sprinkled around and the coloured letters are different civilisations.
At the moment, we just spawn new civilisations over time, if they happen to spawn on top of a resource, they will claim that resource for themselves.
So this is what I'm starting to think about with dynamic tech trees, pressing [t] will toggle between the map and this graph view, which shows resources that are visible on the map as well as the civilisations that are present and these things called innovation tokens.
Pressing [y] and waiting a little bit (or if you're impatient, just hit [t] twice to refresh) will start trying to connect up these resources in different ways to produce new things, it's all very haphazard at the moment and dependent on the presence of the innovation tokens. If you've run out of them, well that's it, no more innovation in that world. Hit [r] to make a new one.
So what are innovation tokens? Well at the moment they're a placeholder, I do want to look at possible ways of generating them via actions taken by:
- The civilisations themselves
- The people living in them
- Interactions between people of different civilisations
- As well as other systems present in the game world
I suppose that's all very vague, but to be honest it's pretty early days.
In the grand scheme of things there's a lot of things that I'd like to dig into and I'm not really sure where it's going to take me, so let's see where we end up =).
